Are There Health Benefits to Vegetarianism like Losing Weight and Living Longer?

A vegetarian lifestyle can be a healthy choice for anyone wishing to control weight, lower cholesterol levels and even live longer. Vegetarians are people who do not consume most animal products (specifically meat), but do still eat other products such as eggs, honey, milk and cheese (dairy products). A lot of people consider vegetarianism to be a modern buzz-phrase or temporary trend, but the truth is vegetarianism has been around since 6th century B.C.
In Greece, Italy and India vegetarianism was linked to the desire not to harm animals. In India, peace toward animals was referred to as ahimsa, and was a common way of life among religious philosophers and people. The conversion of the Roman Empire virtually eliminated vegetarianism and it wasn’t until the 19th and 20th centuries that vegetarianism began to make a comeback in Western society. In 1847, the Vegetarian Society was formed in England and quickly spread across Europe and eventually, the rest of the world.
Most people who practice a vegetarian lifestyle are lacto-vegetarians; that is, they consume dairy products and honey, but no eggs or meat. Approximately 70 percent of the world’s lacto-vegetarians are in India, and for the most part, enjoy an extremely healthy diet.

Lower body weight: people who eat meat will add weight to their body compared to those who do not consume meat. A study by Cancer Research UK also found that non meat eaters put on even less weight as they age.
Lower cholesterol levels: a vegetarian diet of specific plant foods can lower cholesterol levels as effectively as drug treatments.
Longer life span: there have been numerous studies conducted showing that vegetarians live longer due to lower risks of obesity and developing cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Those interested in a vegetarian lifestyle will find a gradual change (instead of cold turkey) much more comfortable. It’s always advisable to speak with a registered nutritionist before making any changes to your diet.
